Utah Jazz is a basketball team that is situated in the Salt Lake City of Utah. Presently they are a member of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). It is amongst the seven teams that are included in the Midwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association. It plays at the Delta Center in Utah wearing purple, white and yellow colored uniforms.
Originally called the New Orleans Jazz, it was relocated to Utah in 1979 owing to the personal reasons of the then owner, Sam Battistone. Jerry Sloan is presently coaching the Jazz which has carved a niche for itself owing to its successes in the 80s and the 90s. They bagged the Western Conference Titles in 1997 and 1998. The team featured several players amongst which Malone and Stockton are considered to be amongst the best players in the history, both individually and in combination.
It was originally located in New Orleans and was named jazz in regards to the rich musical heritage of the city. It became a member of NBA in 1974 with the status of an expansion team. It made a couple of trades and draft picks. They acquired Maravich who was known for his ability of making behind the back passes and consistent scoring that also led to the increase in the popularity of Jazz.

During the 1978-79 season they ended up with the worst record and owing to this the owners decided about the teams relocation to Utah. In 1981-82 the duties of the head coach were assumed by Frank Layden who acquired several star players namely Griffith and Eaton in 1980 and 1982 respectively. It posted its first winning season in 1984 at a record 45-37 and made it to the playoffs for the first time in the same season. It is the first team ever in the NBA history to be led by four players. Dantley bagged the Scoring title at an average of 30.6 points per game, their guard Green made the most number of steals at an average of 2.65 per game, Griffith posted the best goal percentage of 36 whereas Eaton led the blocked shots at an average of 4.28 per game.
In 1984 and 1985 John Stockton and Malone were drafted by Utah respectively. They combined to form the most effective combination in the history of NBA and laid the foundation of a winning Jazz team. They were jointly awarded the Most Valuable Player honors in 1993. To date they have won two Conference titles and six Division Titles.

Jazz posted a finishing season at a record 26-56 in year 2004-2005. This record is their worst ever since the starting season the 80's. They traded three draft picks in exchange for the acquisition of 3 overall picks.They acquired Greg Ostertag of the Kings and traded their player Raul Lopez to the Grizzlies and Snyder to the New Orleans Hornets. It is considered to be the largest trade in the NBA history.
